What is the coefficient of thermal expansion of color-coated aluminum coil?

The coefficient of thermal expansion of color-coated aluminum coil is determined by the base aluminum alloy and is largely unrelated to the type of coating (PE or PVDF).

The linear coefficient of thermal expansion of the commonly used base material 3003-H24 in the 20–100°C range is 2.3 × 10⁻⁵ /K (or 23 × 10⁻⁶ /°C).

Application Tips

1. When designing expansion joints, estimate the coefficient by multiplying the temperature difference by 0.023 mm/(m·°C).

2. Compared to steel (≈12 × 10⁻⁶ /°C), aluminum expands approximately twice as much, requiring greater allowance for movement in curtain wall and roof systems.
